Requests for Facebook Account Data On The Rise

With our lives splashed all over social media, we still try to maintain some form of privacy on the internet. Although we all willingly share our data with the world, Facebook and other social media platforms still try to maintain a sense of privacy for us from the prying eyes.

According to Facebook Inc, the requests for user account data have increased by 9% in the second half of 2016 as compared to the first half by governments. In the case of Pakistan, the case has also been a dramatic where total requests for the period July 2016 to December 2016 shot up by more than 40 percent compared to the last six months.

The requests for account data globally have risen to 64,279 from 59,229 and more than half request the US contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited the social networking website from notifying users.

According to them the Government of Pakistan made a total of 1,002 requests for 1,431 account requests in the second quarter of 2016 out of which Facebook obliged for 67% of the cases. The social networking website also provided information on the number of account preservation requests by Pakistan i.e. 442 cases.

The statement on the website read:

“Based on legal requests from the Pakistan Telecom Authority, we restricted access to content for allegedly violating local laws prohibiting blasphemy, desecration of the national flag, and condemnation of the country’s independence.”

For the first time, Facebook is going to be providing information on internet disruptions that impact access to Facebook products and services.
